Laughter as Self-Care

Have you ever laughed so hard you cried? Have you ever experienced the joy of listening to a baby’s laughter? It is infectious! Few things are better than a good laugh shared between friends and family. Some of my fondest memories were anchored in laughter. The Dictionary of Psychology defines laughter as the vocal expression of amusement and enjoyment. Proverbs 17:22 reminds us that “a joyful heart is good medicine.” Laughter can be induced based on something witnessed, said, or done. It is contagious and encourages unity and positive interactions with others. Here are some of the benefits of laughter.

Laughter can...

  1. Improve your mood.

  2. Reduce your stress levels.

  3. Relax muscle tension.

  4. Improve and increase your mental clarity/focus.

  5. Increase the release of the “feel good” hormones and endorphins.

  6. Reduce your blood pressure.

  7. Increase calorie burn.

Laughter is the outward manifestation of joy. It can be therapeutic and curative. Laughter is indeed good medicine and is good for the soul.
