Creativity as Self-Care

ree

Creativity is the use of the imagination, or original ideas, in the production of artistic work. Art exists in many forms such as poetry, painting, drawing, crocheting, scrapbooking, and pottery-making, to name a few. Tapping into our creative side as an outlet has a calming effect and allows us to release negative emotions. Engaging in creative activities causes the brain to release our “feel-good” chemicals (serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin, and endorphins). Activation of these chemicals leads to decreased anxiety, depression, and feelings of stress. They are the reason we feel happiness and pleasure. They also play a role in our mood regulation. The release of the feel-good hormones is why hearing our favorite song makes us feel better.

Creative time is an emotional outlet and fosters a safe environment for processing past traumas. In this space, we can express ourselves without limits and boundaries. We can process emotions we ordinarily do not have the time or space to do so. It is also usually a solo endeavor that can boost our mood and self-confidence. We control our artistry and everything that happens during the process. There is freedom in autonomy.

Our lives are busy. There always seems to be a laundry list of things to do. Our challenge is to create time and space to care for ourselves. Make time to express yourself in ways that bring you peace and joy. Be creative.

Here’s to your health!
