Touch as Self-Care

ree

The human species needs physical touch. Our bodies require water and oxygen, but we also need the sense of connection that touching provides. Clinical research has proven that human contact is essential for proper fetal growth, language and cognitive skills, and psychosocial development. When babies are deprived of physical touch, they are more likely to have underdeveloped immune systems, delayed physical development, behavioral issues, and higher rates of substance abuse later in life.

Physical touch releases the "love and bonding" hormone oxytocin. It is a feel-good hormone that has effects similar to serotonin and dopamine. These hormones promote calm and stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system. Physical touch releases these hormones and gives us a sense of security and happiness while reducing anxiety and depression. The release of these hormones makes us feel comforted and supported.

As challenges arise in our lives, it is important not to isolate ourselves. In tough times a simple hug can reassure us and allow the body’s natural hormones to rejuvenate us. Our hormones serve as a “reboot” to our emotional and neurological systems. When we feel emotionally drained, we need to allow others to revive us with the benefit of physical touch. It can be a massage or as simple as a handhold. Conversely, remember the power you hold in your hands and touch those around you.
