Sunlight as Self-Care
Self-care comes in many forms and can be as simple as taking a walk. The sun is a star that serves as the energy and heat source for the Earth. During the summer, we can participate in outdoor activities with lots of sun exposure. The month of June can have as much as 15 hours of sunlight. Sunlight has several positive effects on the body and is a great way to nurture the body and provide a little self-care.
Positive Effects of Sunlight on the Body
1. Improved Mood/Depression: Sun exposure leads to the release of serotonin (one of the feel-good hormones).Serotonin makes us feel calm and relieves anxiety and depression.
2. Better Sleep: The sun improves sleep by increasing melatonin release. Melatonin is a hormone made from serotonin and released by the body at night and encourages sleep.
3. Increased Immunity: The sun’s immunity-boosting properties are related to vitamin D. Research suggests the sun increases immunity by energizing T cells and increasing their movement.
4. Supports Your Metabolism: Sunlight optimizes metabolism by helping to shrink and burn fat cells. This activity is highest between four and six in the afternoon.
5. Improves Bone/Teeth Health: The body produces vitamin D when exposed to the sun. Vitamin D facilitates calcium absorption, which is necessary for strong, healthy bones and teeth.
As you can see, the sun is beneficial to the body. The benefits occur by spending at least 30 minutes a day in the sun. Best of all, it’s free!! Do something great for your body and your overall well-being. Get some sun!!
Here’s to your health!
