Stillness as Self-Care

Stillness is the state of calm and quiet. We live in a world that is anything but still. It is full of distractions with consistent bids for our time and attention. Our days overflow with to-do lists, and we live from task to task. During the height of COVID, we enjoyed a more relaxed social calendar. Everything non-essential was in a state of suspension and allowed time for stillness. In the post-COVID era, life is moving at warp speed, and our schedules are on steroids. It feels like we are attempting to reclaim the years we lost to quarantine while simultaneously navigating the present. Time seems to move faster than before, and every moment of the day is accounted for. It is nearly impossible to find uninterrupted peace.

Practicing stillness provides an opportunity to explore our feelings. During times of quiet reflection, it is easier to process our emotions. We can also problem-solve and develop strategies to avoid pitfalls that prevent us from functioning at our best. Stillness is a blank canvas to paint our innermost thoughts without interruption and judgment. During quiet times, we can “sit” with our thoughts, allowing space for understanding, healing, and restoration. In stillness, we appreciate the present moment and take in our surroundings.

The Bible reminds us in Lamentations 3:25-26, “The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.” In our stillness, we can encounter God and know Him in the fullness of His glory. God reveals Himself when we are open to receive from Him. We can see God’s plan for our lives more clearly when centered and grounded.

There are so many benefits to being still. Make time and space to be alone. Your peace of mind is worth it!
