Solitude as Self-Care

Merriam-Webster defines solitude as “the quality or state of being alone or remote from society.” The word that stands out to me is “quality.” The time one spends alone is devoted solely to themselves. Solitude provides the opportunity to turn inward. In solitude, we can hear our inner voice and cater to our needs. Many people struggle with being alone, and those who embrace it find it hard to carve out the time to do so. Spending time alone provides an opportunity to give ourselves the love and care we regularly give to others. For those that struggle with what to do in their alone time, I want to provide a few ideas.
Solitude Moments
1. Take yourself on a date. No one can treat you better than you! Carve out some time for yourself and do something special! Try a new restaurant or a new activity. You are worth it!
2. Go to a movie by yourself. There’s nothing better than watching a good movie while eating your favorite snacks. The best part is you don't have to consider anyone else's opinion about what to watch. Do YOU! Pick a movie theatre with reclining chairs showing the movie you want to see. Pack your purse with your favorite snacks and enjoy!
3. Plan a solo trip! That’s right! By yourself! You can choose the location and itinerary without having to consult with anyone. Select a hotel close to amenities you enjoy and do all the things or do nothing at all. You can catch up on your rest or be bold and try something you have always wanted to try.
4. Read a book. In a world where almost everything we need can be accessed from our cellphones, it’s nice to hold a book in your hand and turn the pages. Reading a good book can be as entertaining as watching a movie. It activates your senses and can transport you to another place and time. Reading can be exciting!
5. Take a hot bath. Talk about relaxing. You can listen to music, watch a movie, or enjoy a glass of wine from the comfort of your bathtub. Water evokes peace and calm while relieving tension and stress. If you are feeling fancy, add a fragrant bath bomb and luxuriate!
There are so many ways to spend your time in solace. No matter what you choose, find something you love to do and enjoy. Spending time with yourself is the best way to show yourself some love. It will rejuvenate and recharge you and allow you to return to the world with renewed energy. Do something special for YOU!
