The practice of self-care is necessary to maintain overall health and well-being. Self-care nurtures and restores physical, emotional, and mental health. Your self-care regimen is as individual as your fingerprints. It is defined and governed by you and based on your needs at a particular time. It is your choice to put your needs ahead of those of others. Like anything else, it requires commitment and consistency. Self-care ensures we live our best life, and it is NOT selfish. You are your highest priority. Self-care is a means of self-preservation. It is impossible to pour from an empty cup. Practicing self-care ensures that your cup remains full and gives you the bandwidth to assist others.
Selfishness is the practice of pursuing your own goals at the expense of others. It means to lack consideration for others while focusing on one’s gain. Conversely, caring for oneself does not mean ceasing to care for others. It simply means you prioritize your needs to ensure your long-term health and well-being.
It takes time and discipline to make self-care a habit. Once self-care is a part of your daily routine, it is an empowering exercise. There are many resources to aid in your efforts to prioritize your self-care. Such resources include your primary care provider, a therapist, or a masseuse. The way you address self-care is individual and may change based on life circumstances. There is no right or wrong way to pursue wellness if you receive the intended outcome. Wellness is the goal.
Self-care is a right and a necessary practice to cope with life’s challenges. Take some time and prioritize yourself. Self-care is not selfish!!
Here’s to your health!
