Protecting Your Summer Sleep as Self-Care

Summer can quietly disrupt one of the most important parts of self-care: sleep. Longer daylight hours, later social plans, travel, and relaxed routines can alter sleep routines. While summer is a wonderful time to enjoy flexibility, your body still benefits from rhythm and rest.
One helpful place to start is with a consistent wake-up time. Even if your evenings vary, waking around the same time most days helps support your internal clock. Morning light can also be useful; opening the blinds or stepping outside briefly signals to your body that the day has begun.
In the evening, create a clear transition from activity to rest. Dim lights, put screens away when you can, and choose a calming activity such as reading, stretching, prayer, or journaling. These small acts cue your brain to wind down.
Summer invitations can be fun, but too many late nights can affect mood, patience, focus, and energy. Before saying yes, ask whether the plan supports the week you want to have. Sometimes self-care looks like leaving early, choosing a quieter option, or scheduling recovery time.
Rest does not have to diminish your summer fun. It can help you enjoy it more by prioritizing rejuvenation. Maintaining a sleep routine, honoring your limits, and giving your mind time to settle, you can move through the season with clarity, steadiness, and joy.
