Merriam-Webster defines stress as “a physical, chemical, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension and may be a factor in disease causation.” Stress is a natural physiological response to interactions within our environment.

The stress response is the brain’s way of ensuring our survival, but is intended to be short-lived. The body releases a hormone called cortisol that plays a major role in the stress response. A person under constant stress may develop physical symptoms such as headaches, high blood pressure, chest pain, sleep disturbance, and overeating. Stress can also manifest in more subtle ways. Here are some symptoms of stress to monitor for.
