Mental health is important at every age and stage of development. Some think of mental health as only psychiatric disorders, but this is inaccurate. While psychiatric and substance abuse disorders fall under the umbrella of mental health, they are not the only disorders. Our mental health affects the way we process and handle life’s stressors. As minorities, we tend to face an extraordinary amount of pressure largely guided by systemic racism, particularly in the workplace. In recent years we have also seen that being black in public spaces can be problematic. These types of life stressors are called microaggressions. They are negative attitudes or hostile communication directed towards marginalized populations. Microaggressions can be intentional or unintentional but harmful in either case. Another life stressor that affects us all at some point in time is mourning the loss of a loved one. Grief (and other stressors) can affect our mental health and prevent us from functioning at capacity.
There is a stigma within communities of color around seeking professional help to maintain mental wellness. It is a cultural norm passed down from generation to generation that we seek the Lord and pray about our problems. Some cultures process grief and loss through ritualistic ceremonies. Those willing to seek help within minority communities face barriers such as the cost of such interventions, transportation to facilities that provide these services, and getting time off from work.
In order to maintain mental fitness, we must first have the tools to identify when we are unwell. A strong support system and community-based resources are also essential elements on the journey to wellness. Remember, we are our best advocates. There is no shame in seeking help to navigate life’s challenges. Whether we need to address psychological issues, substance abuse, or past trauma, asking for help is admirable. do not suffer in silence. Protect your mental health at all costs.
Here’s to your health!
