My mission is to end healthcare disparities for black and brown communities. One of the ways I do this is to impress upon patients the importance of being an educated consumer. Consumer? Yes, you are a consumer of healthcare services. Like anything else, your ability to make informed choices depends on understanding the question and knowing what is at stake. You must also be empowered to make decisions. You would never go to a car lot and allow the salesperson to determine the car you purchase without giving your input. When you present to a dealership, you usually know the vehicles that interest you. Typically, you have done some research. Why would your healthcare be treated any differently?
I believe empowerment comes from education and increasing literacy. To be healthcare literate means to understand and comprehend information. You must also know how to use the information to guide your decision-making. As healthcare literacy improves, engagement between patients and physicians will improve. Patients will be active members of their care team and health outcomes will improve.
The first step to increasing healthcare literacy is to gain knowledge. My website, www.DoctorKellee.health was designed for this purpose. I provide credible health information to help you better understand your health and ways to advocate for yourself. Learning to gravitate towards credible health-related resources is key to improving your healthcare literacy. Another way to improve literacy is to ask questions of those providing your care. Ask questions until you understand. Always remember, YOU are your best advocate!
Here's to your health!
