Engagement as Self-Care

ree

Now, more than ever, it is important to prioritize your mental, spiritual, emotional and physical health. To ensure your total wellness, you should visit a healthcare professional regularly. Doctors have a lot of ground to cover in the short time they share with you during your appointment. Patients often leave the office feeling rushed and unheard. The goal is for you to feel heard and leave the office with your objectives met. Let’s discuss three things you can do to optimize your time in the office and stay engaged.

3 Tips to Stay Engaged at the Doctor’s Office

Tip 1: Come with Your Questions/Concerns Written Down

I encourage my patients to keep a medical journal where they can write down questions for the doctor. You should also record your medications and metrics (such as blood pressure, blood sugar and weight) you are tracking. When you present to the office with your questions written down, you will REMEMBER to ask them. More importantly, you will get answers. You will be a part of the decision-making process rather than being told what will happen. You will leave feeling empowered.

Tip 2: Repeat What You Heard

Repeat what you heard your doctor say. It indicates you are engaged and an active participant in the encounter. Hearing you say what you heard gives the doctor the opportunity to explain anything you may have misunderstood. You will leave the office with a clear understanding of your care plan. Repetition increases retention and improves compliance.

Tip 3: Minimize Distractions

Your doctor has a fixed amount of time with you during each office visit. While you have their attention, make sure they have yours! Turn off your cell phone and anything else that might be a distraction. Your doctor will take their cues from you. If you are engaged and interactive, they will be too. When you are in the room, BE PRESENT. It is your time with your doctor to optimize your health.

Here’s to your health…
