Discipline as Self-Care

Updated: Feb 7, 2023

It’s a new year, and we are in the season of resolutions. It is a time of optimism and intention. Many people forge into the new year with a list of goals they wish to accomplish.

Motivation is high, and everything seems doable.

It is the time of year when people take stock of the previous year, noting mistakes made or promises that went unfilled. It is a healthy exercise that fosters self-improvement and self-care. The idea is to be better in the year ahead by setting measurable outcomes.

When setting goals and logging resolutions, most people are well-intentioned. They have evaluated their shortcomings and believe taking definitive steps will improve their lives. The act of goal setting is ambitious, but ambition alone will not result in success. The key to success in any endeavor is discipline.

Discipline requires a commitment to consistency and repetition. It is the principle of doing what you must do without regard for what you want to do. It requires willpower and steadfastness. Discipline rejects excuses and perseveres. It serves as a constant reminder of the promise you made to yourself. It is the difference between your dreams and your reality.

Have you made declarations about 2023? Have you proclaimed this is your year to ______ (fill in the blank)? Are there promises you intend to keep or goals you wish to reach? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, check your level of discipline. Commit to YOU and make every day count!

Here’s to your health!

This really hit home for me. Thank you for helping put my health in proper perspective. I had a understanding of what I should do, but did not recognize how to put it into action. This is helpful.
