Understanding Headaches as Self-Care

Headaches are considered the leading cause of disability in people under age 50. They are also a leading cause of work absence. Have you ever woken up with a headache? Whether it’s a dull throb or a sharp, pulsating pain, headaches can strike at the worst times—and for what seems like no reason at all. The truth is that headaches have a wide variety of causes and triggers, many of which are linked to lifestyle.  Fortunately, there are also several ways to alleviate the pain from the comfort of your own home.


The Most Common Causes of Headaches

1. Tension and stress stem from muscle contractions in the head and neck. They often feel like a tight band squeezing your forehead and are usually related to stress, anxiety, poor posture, or fatigue.

2. Dehydration from sun exposure, strenuous exercise, or simply not drinking enough water can cause a headache.

3. Lack of sleep alters your brain chemistry, which can lead to frequent headaches or migraines.

4. Eye strain and staring at your computer screen can lead to eye strain, which is another common trigger.

5. Caffeine can both relieve and cause headaches. If your intake fluctuates or you suddenly cut back, your body might protest with a headache.

6. Hormonal changes can cause women to experience headaches during menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause.

7. Food and dietary triggers such as processed meats, chocolate, aged cheese, and food additives like MSG or nitrates, can spark headaches in sensitive individuals.

8. Environmental factors such as bright lights, loud noises, strong smells, or changes in weather and air pressure can all play a role.

1. Stay Hydrated

2. Practice Relaxation Exercises

3. Apply Cold or Warm Compresses

4. Limit Screen Time

5. Get 7-9 Hours of Quality Sleep per Night


Headaches might be common, but that doesn’t mean you have to suffer through them. By understanding the root cause of your headaches and making small changes to your daily routine, you can often keep the pain at bay. If you experience frequent headaches, be sure to speak with your doctor about them.
