Being Present as Self-Care

ree

I recently heard someone say, “be where your feet are.” This statement really resonated with me. I am guilty of wishing for next week to get to a less busy work schedule or a vacation. To wish for another time is a natural response to the busyness of our lives, but it is also dangerous and counterproductive. This practice does not allow us to be fully present in the moment. We are dividing precious resources: our time and energy. To be present, means to focus on the here and now and not on what has been or is to come. Living in the moment requires being intentionally grounded right where we are. When our focus is divided, we are not bringing our best selves to our current endeavors. It will likely take us longer to accomplish the goal, and we are more likely to miss critical details.

We live in a time where we are moving from task to task in a constant state of busy, and we miss the small moments. We miss meaningful, quality time with those we love or doing things we enjoy because we are focused on our to-do list. We are familiar with the adage “careful what you wish for.” While it seems comforting to think of peaceful times that may lie ahead, we do not know what tomorrow holds. The only time we have control over is the present. The bible says in Matthew 6:34, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Wishing for or thinking about another time is not a productive use of our time. It can precipitate fear and anxiety. We are overwhelmed by all that today holds, so thinking about tomorrow only compounds our stress. When our mind and feet are in the same place, we can consciously focus our energy and accomplish our goals. One day at a time. Practicing mindfulness and being present in the moment allows us to set realistic goals and better manage our time and expectations. This sense of control will ease anxiety and increase confidence. Be where your feet are!

Here's to your health!
